The Priority of the Strasbourg Papyrus’s
Tripartite Structure
in Some Early Egyptian Eucharistic Prayers

Walter D. Ray

Abstract

The one-time consensus that the Strasbourg Papyrus contains a complete Eucharistic prayer has been recently challenged by Mikhail Zheltov, in his edition of the Eucharistic prayer in the Barcelona Papyrus, and by Bryan Spinks. In this article I will show through structural analysis that the Egyptian anaphoras of St. Mark/Cyril, Sarapion, and the Barcelona Papyrus all developed from an tripartite structure like that in the Strasbourg Papyrus, which strongly suggests that the latter is a complete prayer.

Sommario
