On the 50th Anniversary of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy

Abstract
The liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council were the fruit many years of pioneering both in Europe and the Americas: the biblical, ecclesiological, ecumenical, liturgical, and patristic movements which grew in concert with the nouvelle théologie and ressourcement of the 1940s. It was precisely the liturgical movement’s interaction with those other ecclesial movements for reform that enabled its success and led ultimately to the promulgation of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum concilium. The Liturgy Constitution itself contains the Council’s ecclesiology in miniature. The very title of that document already indicates that its concerns are much more than simply discussing the reform of the liturgy, but rather the broader aims of the Council. Fifty years on, we have only begun to understand the theological and pastoral richness of Sacrosanctum concilium, and much remains to be done in the area of liturgical formation for both clergy and laity alike.

Le riforme liturgiche promosse dal Concilio Vaticano II sono state il frutto di molti anni di lavoro e riflessione sia in Europa che nelle Americhe: il movimento biblico, ecclesiologico, ecumenico, liturgico e patristico che crebbero in concerto con la nouvelle théologie e ressourcement del 1940. Fu proprio l’interrelazione del movimento liturgico con gli altri movimenti ecclesiali di riforma che hanno permesso il suo successo e hanno portato, infine, alla promulgazione della Costituzione sulla Sacra Liturgia Sacrosanctum concilium. Essa contiene l’ecclesiologia del Concilio “in miniatura”. Il titolo di tale documento indica già che le sue preoccupazioni vanno ben oltre il semplice discutere la riforma della liturgia; esse riguardano piuttosto gli obiettivi più ampi del concilio stesso. Cinquant’anni dopo, abbiamo solo cominciato a capire la ricchezza teologica e pastorale della Sacrosanctum concilium e molto resta ancora da fare nel campo della formazione liturgica sia del clero sia dei laici.
