Prayers after communion in the Gothic Missal

Abstract
Dr. Thomas Krosnicki contributes to the present ongoing study of the 7th century Gothic Missal with an investigation specifically focused on the Prayers After Communion which it offers. Although the Missal contains only 77 Masses, there are 15 Masses which include designated Post Communion Prayers—from the Christmas Vigil to six specific Sunday Mass texts. Curiously, the 29 prayers are of two kinds: some constitute invitations to pray whereas others are Prayers After Communion proper, as traditionally known. The author explores these texts in terms of their liturgical significance, variant nomenclature, structure and content. Due attention is given to the study of these medieval texts in terms of the theological statements they proffer, the Eucharistic vocabulary they employ and the liturgical elements which shape their structure: address forms, specific petitions offered, and final end forms.

Il Dr. Krosnicki contribuisce agli attuali studi sul Messale Gotico del VII secolo con una ricerca specifica e centrata sulle orazioni dopo la comunione. Delle settantasette messe contenute nel Gotico, ci sono quindici formulari con le orazioni dopo la comunione – dalla Vigilia di Natale a sei testi specifici della Messa domenicale. In particolare le ventinove preghiere sono di due tipi: il primo comprende esortazioni alla preghiera mentre altre sono propriamente orazioni dopo la comunione così come sono tradizionalmente conosciute. L’autore esplora questi testi secondo la loro rilevanza liturgica. La dovuta attenzione è rivolta allo studio di questi testi medievali per quanto riguarda le affermazioni teologiche che propongono, il vocabolario eucaristico che utilizzano e gli elementi liturgici che ne modellano la struttura: le formule di indirizzo, petizioni specifiche di offerta e le formule di conclusione.
Thomas Krosnicki received his doctorate in liturgical studies from Sant’Anselmo in 1973. He has served as Director of the US Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy and as a Consultor to the Congregation for for Divine Worship. In addition to teaching, he continues to publish internationally on liturgical issues and texts.
